Experimental gene therapy aims to trick immune system to attack brain tumors

NCT ID NCT06914479

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-stage trial tests a new combination treatment for children and young adults (ages 3-39) with recurrent malignant brain tumors that can be surgically removed. The treatment uses two genetically modified viruses injected into the tumor site, plus an oral anti-herpes drug, to kill cancer cells and stimulate the immune system to attack the tumor. The main goal is to check safety and find the best dose, with only 11 participants enrolled.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

genetically modified viruses (AdV-HSV1-TK and AdV-Flt3L) plus valacyclovir

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for recurrent malignant brain tumors that are hard to treat.

What could go wrong

This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 11 participants, so it is primarily testing safety and dosing. The treatment may not shrink tumors or improve survival, and there could be side effects from the viruses or valacyclovir.
