Can brain scans predict suicide risk in teens? new study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07568054

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will use brain scans (MEG and MRI) to look at brain activity in 60 young people aged 14-24 who have either attempted suicide, have ongoing suicidal thoughts, or are healthy. The goal is to find brain patterns linked to suicide risk. High-risk participants will also receive a therapy called CAMS, and their brains will be scanned again to see if the therapy changes brain function. This research may help doctors better predict and treat suicidal behavior in youth.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) therapy

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help identify brain markers that predict suicide risk and show how CAMS therapy works in the brain, leading to better treatments for at-risk youth.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage observational study with only 60 participants. It may not find clear brain differences, and results may not apply to all youth. CAMS therapy is already used, but its brain effects are unknown.
