Brain zapping study seeks to tame stress

NCT ID NCT06603064

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are testing whether a short, non-invasive brain stimulation technique called continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) can alter emotional and physical responses to stress. Fifty-five healthy adults will receive both real and sham stimulation on separate visits, then perform tasks inside an MRI scanner. The goal is to see if targeting a specific brain region changes brain activity, heart rate, blood pressure, and feelings of stress.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reveal how brain stimulation might be used to help people manage stress and anxiety in the future.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study in healthy volunteers, not patients. It only tests immediate effects, not long-term benefits or real-world stress reduction.
