Could a gentle brain zap ease PTSD symptoms? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT05895006

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how the brains of people with PTSD process sensory information differently. Researchers will use a mild electrical current (tACS) applied to the scalp to see if it can change brain activity and reduce feelings of anxiety and hypervigilance. The study involves 160 adults aged 18-50, including those with PTSD and healthy volunteers, and uses EEG and fMRI to measure brain changes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment for anxiety and hypervigilance in PTSD.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage, basic science study focused on understanding brain mechanisms, not a treatment trial. The sample is small and results may not lead to a direct therapy.
