New brain scan may predict chemo brain in young leukemia patients

NCT ID NCT06421155

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a quick, non-invasive brain scan called Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) in children and young adults with acute leukemia. The goal is to see if the scan can detect early brain changes caused by chemotherapy. Participants also take a fun, game-like memory test on an iPad. The study aims to find ways to prevent long-term thinking and memory problems in survivors.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help identify patients at risk for cognitive side effects from chemotherapy, leading to earlier interventions.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early pilot study (20 participants) that is currently suspended. It is designed to test imaging methods, not to prove a treatment benefit.
