Music and language may reveal hidden consciousness in brain injury patients

NCT ID NCT04712591

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether unconscious patients with brain injuries who show brain activity in response to music and language on an EEG are more likely to wake up and recover. Researchers will monitor 300 adults in the ICU, along with healthy volunteers, to see if these brain signals can predict better outcomes. The goal is to find a simple bedside test that helps doctors understand a patient's chances of recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help doctors predict which unconscious patients are likely to wake up and recover better after a brain injury.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study, not a treatment. It may not find a clear link between brain activity and recovery, and results may not apply to all patients.
