Vertigo and stress: new study probes the nervous system link

NCT ID NCT07472998

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is looking at whether people with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) have differences in their autonomic nervous system compared to healthy people. Researchers will measure heart rate variability (HRV) in 104 participants (52 with BPPV and 52 matched controls) during rest and controlled breathing. They will also assess perceived stress levels to see if stress is linked to autonomic function in BPPV. The goal is to better understand the biological connection between vertigo and stress.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If this study finds a clear link between BPPV and autonomic dysfunction, it could point toward stress management or vagal tone therapies as supportive treatments for vertigo.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early observational study, not a treatment trial. It may find no meaningful differences between groups, and any associations may not lead to new therapies.
