New MRI could replace CT scans for spine imaging

NCT ID NCT06745791

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a new MRI technique called BoneMRI that creates CT-like images of the spine without using radiation. Researchers will compare BoneMRI images to standard CT scans in 450 people who need both scans. If accurate, BoneMRI could allow doctors to diagnose and plan spine treatments using just one safe scan.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
BoneMRI (a special MRI technique that creates CT-like images of bone)
What this could lead to
If successful, BoneMRI could replace CT scans for spine imaging, giving doctors clear bone images without radiation exposure. This could make diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgery safer and more efficient.
What could go wrong
This is a validation study, not a treatment trial. It checks if the new MRI technique is accurate enough. There is no guarantee it will work for all patients or replace standard CT scans.
