Blood thinners after vein laser: which works best to stop dangerous clots?
NCT ID NCT07699796
First seen Jul 13, 2026 · Last updated Jul 17, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This trial tests whether a short 5-day course of the blood thinners rivaroxaban (Xarelto) or apixaban (Eliquis) can prevent blood clots that sometimes form after laser treatment for varicose veins. Adults with symptomatic vein reflux undergoing laser ablation of the great saphenous vein are randomly assigned to receive one of the two blood thinners or no blood thinner. The study tracks clot formation using ultrasound to see which approach is safest and most effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and apixaban (Eliquis)
- What this could lead to
- If one blood thinner works better, it could become the standard short course to prevent clots after this common vein procedure.
- What could go wrong
- This is a single-centre trial, so results may not apply everywhere. Blood thinners also carry a small risk of bleeding.
