Can a simple blood-dilution trick slash transfusions in heart surgery?
NCT ID NCT03913481
First seen May 08, 2026 · Last updated May 08, 2026
Summary
This study tests a technique called acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) in 2000 patients having elective heart surgery. Before surgery, some blood is removed and replaced with fluids, then returned after the main procedure. The goal is to see if this reduces the number of patients who need a red blood cell transfusion during their hospital stay. The study aims to provide strong evidence for a simple, low-cost way to save blood.
