New study tests which blood filter works best for septic kids

NCT ID NCT05692011

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two types of blood purification membranes (AN69ST and polysulphone) in 80 children with sepsis, ages 29 days to 18 years. The goal is to see which membrane better reduces inflammatory cytokines and organ damage. Children receive continuous blood purification for 3 days, and outcomes are measured at day 3 and day 7, with survival tracked at day 28.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

blood purification device (AN69ST or polysulphone membrane)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show which membrane better reduces harmful inflammation and organ damage in children with sepsis, potentially improving survival.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (80 children) comparing two devices, not testing a new drug. Results may not apply broadly, and the primary outcome is a short-term change in inflammatory markers, not long-term survival.
