Blood pressure drugs may slow brain damage in seniors
NCT ID NCT02472028
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether lowering blood pressure can slow the growth of white matter lesions in the brains of older adults (60-88) with high blood pressure and memory complaints. About 820 participants will receive either standard care or an enhanced blood pressure lowering strategy using common medications. The goal is to see if better blood pressure control can preserve brain health over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
blood pressure lowering drugs (diuretics, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium channel blockers)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that controlling blood pressure helps preserve brain health and slow cognitive decline in older adults.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 study, but results may not apply to all older adults. Blood pressure medications can cause side effects like dizziness or falls.
