This study investigates how different levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood affect the strength and function of the diaphragm and leg muscles, both at rest and during exercise. Sixteen healthy, non-smoking adults will breathe various gas mixtures—including low oxygen (hypoxia), high carbon dioxide (hypercapnia), or a combination—for two hours, followed by a maximal breathing effort test.
