A softer path to stronger muscles for arthritis?
NCT ID NCT07772687
First seen Aug 19, 2026 · Last updated Aug 20, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether blood flow restriction training (BFRT) — using pressure cuffs during low-load exercise — can help people with rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis build muscle with less joint strain than conventional strength training. Adults with these conditions will be randomly assigned to BFRT, standard resistance training, or no training for 12 weeks. Researchers will measure muscle growth, disease activity, and how well participants stick with the program.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) using pressure cuffs during low-load exercise
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a gentler way for people with arthritis to build muscle and improve function without stressing painful joints.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study, so results may not be definitive. The training may be hard to tolerate, and there are risks like blood clots, though people at higher risk are excluded.
