Spit test may reveal if root canal worked

NCT ID NCT07468643

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study follows 60 adults with infected teeth who receive standard root canal treatment. Researchers collect fluid from around the tooth before and after treatment to see if certain proteins can predict whether the infection heals on X-rays after one year. The goal is to find a simple way to monitor healing without extra radiation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help dentists predict which root canals are healing properly without relying only on X-rays.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study, not a treatment trial. The biomarkers may not reliably predict healing in real-world settings.
