Lab note could unmask hidden cholesterol disease
NCT ID NCT05614219
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding a short interpretive comment to blood test results for high cholesterol can encourage doctors to refer more patients to specialized lipid clinics. The goal is to increase detection of familial hypercholesterolemia, a common inherited condition that is often missed. About 2,000 people referred to lipid clinics in southern Denmark will be included, and the comment will be rolled out step-by-step across different labs.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Interpretive comment on lab results
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this simple change in lab reports could help identify many more people with familial hypercholesterolemia, leading to earlier treatment and prevention of heart disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is a quality-improvement study, not a test of a new drug. The comment may not change doctor behavior, and the effect on actual diagnosis rates might be small.
