Lab note could unmask hidden cholesterol disease

NCT ID NCT05614219

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding a short interpretive comment to blood test results for high cholesterol can encourage doctors to refer more patients to specialized lipid clinics. The goal is to increase detection of familial hypercholesterolemia, a common inherited condition that is often missed. About 2,000 people referred to lipid clinics in southern Denmark will be included, and the comment will be rolled out step-by-step across different labs.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Interpretive comment on lab results

What this could lead to

If successful, this simple change in lab reports could help identify many more people with familial hypercholesterolemia, leading to earlier treatment and prevention of heart disease.

What could go wrong

This is a quality-improvement study, not a test of a new drug. The comment may not change doctor behavior, and the effect on actual diagnosis rates might be small.
