Can a gentle strength trick rebuild arm muscle in kids with cerebral palsy?
NCT ID NCT07748052
First seen Aug 05, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether strength training combined with blood flow restriction can increase deltoid muscle thickness and improve upper limb function in children aged 4 to 6 with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Participants will do a specially designed physical therapy program plus low-load resistance exercises with a pneumatic cuff partially restricting blood flow, three times a week for six weeks. The study measures muscle thickness via ultrasound and upper limb function using a quality of upper-extremity skills test.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Strength training combined with blood flow restriction and a designed physical therapy program
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this approach could offer a new way to improve arm muscle size and function in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy, potentially enhancing their daily abilities.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, and results may not apply to all children. Blood flow restriction requires careful monitoring to ensure safety in young participants.
