New study brings opioid addiction treatment to community centers

NCT ID NCT06416020

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether offering medication for opioid use disorder (buprenorphine) in community settings—like churches or social service centers—via telemedicine, plus one-on-one coaching, helps people stay in treatment longer than standard clinic care. About 400 participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups and followed for 24 weeks. The goal is to improve retention and reduce opioid use in high-risk urban neighborhoods.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

buprenorphine

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could make it easier for people with opioid use disorder to stay in treatment and reduce overdose risk.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage behavioral study; results may not show a clear benefit, and telemedicine or community support may not work for everyone.
