New anesthesia approach aims to cut Post-Surgery opioid pills

NCT ID NCT03726268

Summary

This study tested if using a longer-acting opioid (methadone) during anesthesia for outpatient surgery leads to better pain relief and reduces the number of opioid pills patients need to take at home after their procedure. It involved 907 adults having surgery with an expected hospital stay of less than 24 hours. The main goal was to see if this change could lessen leftover prescription opioids, which can be misused.
