Could a common supplement boost antibiotic success for a hidden cause of infertility?

NCT ID NCT07180563

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding berberine (a natural compound) to the standard antibiotic doxycycline works better than doxycycline alone for chronic endometritis, an inflammation of the uterine lining that can cause infertility. About 206 women with the condition will take either the combination or the antibiotic alone for 14 days. The main goal is to see if the infection clears more often with the combination, and to track polyp recurrence.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
berberine and doxycycline
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a more effective treatment for chronic endometritis, potentially improving fertility outcomes and reducing uterine polyp recurrence.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 1/2 trial with only 206 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Side effects like nausea, rash, or drug fever are possible, and the combination may not be more effective than doxycycline alone.
