Could a shot every two weeks beat weekly diabetes drugs?

NCT ID NCT07628985

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new medicine called bofanglutide (GZR18) for adults with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is not well controlled with metformin alone. Bofanglutide is given as a shot under the skin every two weeks, and researchers compare it to semaglutide, a weekly injection. The goal is to see if bofanglutide can lower blood sugar as effectively and safely as semaglutide over 30 weeks. About 374 Latin American adults will take part, continuing their metformin while receiving either bofanglutide or semaglutide.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
bofanglutide (GZR18)
What this could lead to
If successful, bofanglutide could offer a convenient every-two-week injection option for managing type 2 diabetes, potentially improving treatment adherence.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 3 trial, so results are not yet confirmed. Bofanglutide may not prove as effective or safe as semaglutide, and side effects common to GLP-1 drugs (e.g., nausea, vomiting) are possible.
