Could a bag CPAP device save lives in Low-Resource hospitals?
NCT ID NCT07460427
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a Bag CPAP device, added to standard oxygen, can reduce the need for breathing tubes in adults with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. Researchers in Rwanda will randomly assign 250 patients to receive either Bag CPAP plus oxygen or oxygen alone. The main goal is to see if fewer patients meet criteria for intubation by day 7.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Bag CPAP device
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a low-cost way to reduce the need for breathing tubes and improve survival in resource-limited hospitals.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial in one country, and the device may cause side effects like skin sores or sinusitis. It may not reduce intubation rates as hoped.
