New monthly shot for schizophrenia enters early human testing
NCT ID NCT07484204
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial is testing a long-acting injectable form of the drug cariprazine, called AX251, in 48 adults with stable schizophrenia. The study aims to see how the drug moves through the body and whether it is safe when given as a single shot at different doses. If results are promising, it could lead to a more convenient treatment option that requires fewer doses.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cariprazine (long-acting injectable)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a longer-lasting treatment option for schizophrenia, potentially reducing the need for daily pills.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 study with only 48 participants, so safety and effectiveness are not yet known. The drug may cause side effects or not work as hoped.
