One shot to stop asthma ER visits? new trial tests simpler fix

NCT ID NCT07228052

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether a single injection of dexamethasone works as well as a 5-day course of prednisone pills to prevent asthma patients from returning to the emergency room. About 182 adults with asthma will be randomly assigned to get either the shot or the pills. Researchers will check asthma control and quality of life after 4 weeks, and track any return ER visits within 30 days.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Dexamethasone injection or prednisone pills
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simpler, one-shot treatment to keep asthma patients out of the emergency room.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (182 people) comparing two existing drugs, so it may not show a clear advantage. The shot might not control symptoms as well as the full pill course.
