Glowing dye could cut bowel leak risk in ovarian cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT04878094
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether using a fluorescent dye and special camera during ovarian cancer surgery can help surgeons see blood flow in the bowel and reduce the risk of leaks after reconnecting it. About 310 women with ovarian cancer who need bowel surgery will be randomly assigned to get either the dye-guided imaging or standard checks. The goal is to see if this technique lowers the chance of serious complications within 30 days after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Indocyanine Green (ICG) dye
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could reduce serious bowel leaks after ovarian cancer surgery, leading to fewer complications and better recovery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a phase III trial, but the dye and imaging system are already used in other surgeries. The main risk is that it may not significantly lower leak rates compared to standard methods.
