New lung implant aims to release trapped air in emphysema patients
NCT ID NCT05949645
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests a new device called the Apreo Implant, which is placed in the airways during a bronchoscopy to release trapped air in severely overinflated lungs. Up to 30 people with severe emphysema will receive up to two procedures, with follow-up for one year. The main goals are to see if the procedure is safe and if it improves breathing.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Apreo Implant (a device placed in the airways to release trapped air)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, less invasive option to help people with severe emphysema breathe easier and feel better.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early feasibility study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The implant procedure carries risks like any bronchoscopy, including infection or lung injury.
