New study tests simpler blood thinner regimen after heart procedure
NCT ID NCT04796714
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two blood thinner strategies after left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) in people with atrial fibrillation. Sixty participants will receive either aspirin alone or aspirin plus clopidogrel for three months. The goal is to see which approach better prevents small brain lesions seen on MRI scans, which are linked to stroke risk.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Aspirin and clopidogrel (antiplatelet drugs)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that aspirin alone is as effective as dual therapy after LAAC, potentially simplifying treatment and reducing bleeding risks.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (60 participants) focused on MRI findings, not clinical outcomes. Results may not apply to all patients, and the best strategy remains uncertain.
