New pill shows promise for early rheumatoid arthritis in Mid-Stage trial
NCT ID NCT06671054
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This Phase 2 trial tests an oral drug called AP1189 in 240 people with early rheumatoid arthritis who have not yet taken disease-modifying drugs. Participants receive one of three doses of AP1189 or a placebo, all alongside standard methotrexate, for 12 weeks. The goal is to see if AP1189 safely reduces joint inflammation and disease activity better than placebo.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AP1189 (an oral tablet) taken alongside methotrexate
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a new treatment option for early rheumatoid arthritis that helps control inflammation and disease activity.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 240 participants, so results may not confirm effectiveness. The drug is still experimental, and side effects are not yet fully known.
