Scientists scan Women's brains to unlock mystery of antipsychotic side effects

NCT ID NCT06251635

Summary

This study aims to understand why women taking antipsychotic medications often develop serious metabolic side effects like weight gain and diabetes. Researchers will use MRI brain scans on 15 healthy young women to see how a common antipsychotic (olanzapine) and intranasal insulin affect the brain differently during two phases of the menstrual cycle. The goal is to gather new knowledge about the poorly understood link between these drugs, brain insulin, and women's hormonal cycles.
