Major cancer center tests which antibiotic best shields surgery patients

NCT ID NCT03269994

Summary

This large, completed study aimed to find out which of two commonly used antibiotics works better at preventing surgical site infections after a major pancreatic surgery called pancreatoduodenectomy. Nearly 1,000 adult patients scheduled for this surgery were randomly assigned to receive either cefoxitin or piperacillin-tazobactam before their operation. The main goal was to see which drug led to fewer infections in the 30 days after surgery.
