Gallbladder surgery study seeks to cut anesthesia use with better breathing tube
NCT ID NCT03812718
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two types of breathing tubes used during gallbladder surgery: the standard endotracheal tube and a laryngeal mask airway. Researchers want to see if one requires less propofol (anesthesia medicine) to keep patients asleep. 160 adults having elective gallbladder surgery will be randomly assigned to one of the two devices. The goal is to find which tube allows for a lighter, yet safe, level of anesthesia.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
propofol
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help anesthesiologists choose the best airway device to reduce the amount of anesthesia needed during gallbladder surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study focused on measuring anesthesia use, not on curing or treating a disease. Results may not apply to other surgeries or patients.
