PET scans may reveal hidden cause of brain bleeds

NCT ID NCT01619709

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at 70 people who had a brain hemorrhage (bleeding stroke) to see if a special PET scan could tell whether the bleeding was caused by amyloid buildup in blood vessels or by high blood pressure. Participants received an injection of a radioactive tracer called Florbetapir, followed by a brain scan. The goal was to improve diagnosis of the underlying cause, which could guide future treatment decisions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Florbetapir F 18 (PET imaging tracer)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors better distinguish between different causes of brain hemorrhage, leading to more targeted treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed observational study, not a treatment trial. The imaging method may not prove useful in routine practice or change patient outcomes.
