Dialysis patients may regain muscle with simple supplement and exercise combo

NCT ID NCT05884138

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether taking essential amino acids (protein building blocks) combined with resistance exercise for 12 weeks can improve muscle strength and function in people on hemodialysis who have sarcopenia (muscle loss). Forty participants will be randomly assigned to the intervention or usual care. The goal is to see if this approach can help patients walk better and feel stronger.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

essential amino acid supplementation and resistance exercise

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to help dialysis patients regain muscle strength and mobility.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants. The results may not apply to all dialysis patients, and the benefits could be modest.
