Could a common cold drug stop chronic pain after chest surgery?
NCT ID NCT06833203
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding amantadine (a drug used for flu and Parkinson's) to pregabalin (a nerve pain medication) can prevent chronic pain after chest surgery. Sixty cancer patients having chest surgery took either both drugs or pregabalin alone for five days. Researchers then checked for pain 12 weeks later and measured quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Amantadine and Pregabalin
What this could lead to
If it works, this combination could help prevent long-term pain after chest surgery, improving recovery and quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 60 participants. Results may not apply to everyone, and the benefit over pregabalin alone may be small or absent.
