New drug cocktail could simplify treatment for dangerous lung lining infection
NCT ID NCT07432373
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests two different drug combinations for pleural infection, a serious infection of the lung lining that often requires surgery. The standard treatment uses two drugs (alteplase and DNase) given through a chest tube. This trial compares that to a new combination using alteplase and Tyloxapol. The goal is to see if the new combo works as well or better at clearing the infection and reducing the need for surgery. The study will involve 80 adults with pleural infection who have poor drainage from a chest tube.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Alteplase (t-PA) combined with either DNase or Tyloxapol, given directly into the chest cavity
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a simpler, shorter treatment option for pleural infection, potentially reducing the need for surgery and hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (80 people) that hasn't started yet. The new drug combo may not work as well as the standard, and individual results may vary.
