New hope for malnourished kids: Peanut-Free food could save more lives
NCT ID NCT06912620
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two new types of ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs) for treating severe and moderate acute malnutrition in children aged 6-59 months in Burkina Faso. The new RUTFs are made without peanuts or dairy, which could lower costs and reduce contamination risks. Over 2,200 children were randomly assigned to receive either the standard peanut-dairy RUTF or one of the two alternatives, and researchers tracked recovery and relapse rates for three months after treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs) - soy-based or soy-maize-sorghum-based alternatives to standard peanut-dairy RUTF
- What this could lead to
- If successful, these cheaper, locally-sourced RUTFs could effectively treat child wasting and reduce relapse, making treatment more accessible in low-resource settings.
- What could go wrong
- This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results are not yet published. The alternative RUTFs may not be as effective as the standard, or may cause unexpected side effects like allergies.
