Could an antioxidant shield the penis from damage after a painful erection?

NCT ID NCT07391709

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study in 18 rats investigates whether alpha lipoic acid, a natural antioxidant, can protect penile tissue from damage caused by restoring blood flow after a prolonged painful erection (priapism). Researchers will measure various markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in blood and tissue. The goal is to see if this simple supplement might one day help prevent long-term harm in men who experience this condition.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

alpha lipoic acid

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a treatment to prevent tissue damage from prolonged painful erections in humans.

What could go wrong

This is a very early animal study with only 18 rats. Results may not apply to humans, and the treatment may not be effective or safe.
