First seen Dec 16, 2025 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 20 times
Summary
This early-phase study at Stanford tested whether an oral nutritional supplement called alpha-ketoglutarate can reach the eyes and affect eye health. Seventeen adults with age-related eye diseases took the supplement before cataract surgery. Researchers measured how much of the supplement got into eye fluid and looked for changes in eye proteins and pathways. The goal was to understand how the supplement works in the eye, not to treat the disease directly.
