Simple stool test could spot gut inflammation without a scope
NCT ID NCT06810518
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a new stool test that measures calprotectin, a protein that signals inflammation in the gut. The goal is to see if the test can help doctors diagnose Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and tell them apart from irritable bowel syndrome. About 220 adults with gut symptoms will provide stool samples, which will be compared to results from colonoscopy. If accurate, this test could offer a simpler, less invasive way to diagnose inflammatory bowel disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- ALPCO Calprotectin CLIA assay (a stool test device)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this test could help doctors quickly and accurately tell the difference between inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome, reducing the need for invasive procedures.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The test may not be accurate enough to replace current methods, and results may not apply to all patients.
