Blood test may spot breast cancer recurrence years earlier

NCT ID NCT03357120

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is looking at whether tracking tiny bits of tumor DNA in the blood can help predict if breast cancer will come back after chemotherapy and surgery. Researchers will take blood samples from 180 people every 6 months for 5 years. The goal is to see if these DNA clues can warn of a relapse before symptoms appear.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test that helps doctors detect breast cancer recurrence earlier, potentially improving follow-up care.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not show a clear link between DNA mutations and recurrence, and results may not change current care for years.
