Algae-Powered bandage could speed up wound healing

NCT ID NCT07157657

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding live microalgae to a standard skin-regeneration scaffold helps deep wounds heal faster and with fewer infections. Twenty adults with full-thickness skin wounds will receive both the standard scaffold and the algae-enhanced version on different parts of their wound. Researchers will compare how quickly each area forms healthy tissue and track infection rates over time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

photosynthetic microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris) embedded in a dermal regeneration matrix

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to faster wound healing and fewer infections for people with deep skin wounds, reducing the need for multiple surgeries.

What could go wrong

This is a small early-phase trial with only 20 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The algae are live and require special light dressings, which could complicate use or cause unexpected reactions.
