Can adding albumin improve burn resuscitation?
NCT ID NCT04356859
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether adding albumin (a protein) to standard IV fluids helps adults with severe burns covering at least 25% of their body. 101 participants were randomly assigned to receive either standard fluids alone or standard fluids plus albumin during the first 24-48 hours after injury. The goal was to see if albumin reduces the total fluid needed and improves urine output and other outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Albumin (human)
What this could lead to
If adding albumin works, it could reduce the amount of fluid needed during burn resuscitation, potentially lowering complications like swelling and organ damage.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 101 participants, so results may not apply to all burn patients. Albumin is expensive and may not improve survival or other key outcomes.
