Breathing easier, lowering pressure: HEPA filters tested in NYC housing
NCT ID NCT05874479
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study tests whether using portable air cleaners with HEPA filters at home can lower blood pressure in adults with hypertension living in New York City public housing. Fine particle air pollution is linked to high blood pressure, and these devices aim to reduce indoor exposure. Over 440 participants will use either a real or sham air cleaner and measure their blood pressure daily for up to 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Portable air cleaner with HEPA filter
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could show that using HEPA air cleaners at home helps lower blood pressure in people with hypertension living in areas with high air pollution.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively early-stage study (no phase) with 440 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The effect on blood pressure may be small or not last long, and the sham group gets no real filter.
