AI takes on medical paperwork: can it code better than humans?
NCT ID NCT06286865
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This completed trial tested whether an AI system called Easy-ICD helps clinical coders assign ICD-10 codes to medical notes more quickly and accurately. Fifteen healthcare professionals coded 20 clinical notes both with and without the AI tool. The goal was to see if AI can reduce the burden of clinical coding while improving quality.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Easy-ICD (AI-based computer-assisted clinical coding system)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that AI can help medical coders work faster and more accurately, potentially reducing administrative burden in healthcare.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 15 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The AI tool may not improve accuracy or speed in real-world settings.
