AI heart test could speed up lifesaving device implants

NCT ID NCT07217236

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This trial is testing whether an artificial intelligence-enhanced electrocardiogram (AI-ECG) can better identify patients who need a cardiac implantable electronic device (like a pacemaker or defibrillator) compared to standard care. Over 11,000 participants will be randomly assigned to either the AI-ECG strategy or usual care. Those flagged as high-risk by the AI will receive a continuous heart monitor for up to 7 days. The goal is to see if the AI approach leads to more timely and appropriate device implantation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

AI-enhanced electrocardiogram (ECG) with continuous cardiac rhythm monitoring

What this could lead to

If successful, this AI strategy could help doctors more quickly and accurately identify patients who need a pacemaker or defibrillator, potentially preventing serious heart complications.

What could go wrong

This is a large but early-stage trial, and the AI may not prove better than standard care. There is also a risk of false positives leading to unnecessary procedures or false negatives missing patients who need treatment.
