AI reads chest X-Rays to catch lung cancer earlier
NCT ID NCT06044454
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study is testing an artificial intelligence software called qXR that automatically analyzes chest X-rays to spot signs of lung cancer. The goal is to see if using AI to prioritize which X-rays need urgent review can speed up the time it takes for patients to get a follow-up CT scan or a final decision. The study involves 60,000 adults in Scotland whose chest X-rays are taken as part of routine care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
qXR (artificial intelligence software for chest X-ray analysis)
What this could lead to
If successful, this AI could help doctors find lung cancer earlier by flagging suspicious chest X-rays faster, potentially improving survival rates.
What could go wrong
This is a large but early-stage real-world test. The AI may not speed up diagnosis as hoped, or could miss some cancers. It is not a treatment itself.
