Kidney transplant study tests vaccine booster strategy

NCT ID NCT05060991

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether temporarily reducing immunosuppressive medication can help kidney transplant recipients mount a stronger immune response to a third dose of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. Fourteen participants with low or no antibodies will have their antimetabolite dose lowered before and after vaccination. The goal is to see if this improves antibody levels while monitoring for organ rejection.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

reduction in antimetabolite immunosuppression (mycophenolate mofetil/mycophenolic acid or azathioprine)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a way to improve vaccine protection for immunocompromised kidney transplant recipients.

What could go wrong

This is a very small early-phase study with only 14 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Lowering immunosuppression carries a risk of organ rejection.
