New ER exam could slash vertigo misdiagnosis

NCT ID NCT05062915

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether using specialized eye-movement tests (HINTS and v-HIT) in the emergency room can help doctors correctly diagnose the cause of sudden vertigo. Researchers tracked 90 adults with acute vertigo to see if these tests reduced misdiagnosis and sped up treatment. They also looked at whether early balance training helped patients recover faster.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

HINTS and v-HIT diagnostic tests, plus vestibular rehabilitation

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to faster, more accurate diagnosis of vertigo causes in emergency rooms, reducing unnecessary tests and improving treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a completed observational study with only 90 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The diagnostic tests require specialized training and equipment.
