Can a simple suture tape make ACL surgery stronger?
NCT ID NCT05532189
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study will test whether adding a suture tape (internal brace) to standard ACL reconstruction helps people recover faster and have fewer re-injuries. About 200 people with a first-time ACL tear will be randomly assigned to get either the standard surgery or the surgery with the extra tape. Researchers will track how quickly each group returns to full activity and how stable their knees remain over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
suture tape (internal brace)
What this could lead to
If it works, adding a suture tape during ACL surgery could help people return to sports faster and lower the chance of re-tearing the ligament.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial that hasn't started recruiting yet. The added tape might not make a meaningful difference, and there is always a risk of surgical complications or the graft failing over time.
