Glow-in-the-Dark dye could help surgeons spot hidden lung cancer
NCT ID NCT07499674
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This Phase 3 trial tests a fluorescent dye called abenacianine that makes lung cancer cells glow under a special camera during surgery. About 132 people having lung cancer surgery will receive the dye. The goal is to see if the dye helps surgeons find tumors that are hard to see with the naked eye or standard scans. The study compares results from the dye camera to standard surgical techniques.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- abenacianine (VGT-309)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could give surgeons a real-time tool to spot hidden lung cancer during surgery, potentially reducing the chance of leaving cancer behind.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 3 trial, but it's still experimental. The dye may cause false positives (normal tissue lighting up) or fail to find all tumors. Side effects from the dye are possible.
